Authorities in eastern China's Zhejiang Province have evacuated about 282,000 people ahead of Typhoon Kong-Ri, which is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rains and high flood risks to the province.
The Xinhua News Agency reported that the relevant authorities have opened more than 10,600 shelters across the province to provide food and drinking water to those who have been temporarily evacuated.
The large-scale evacuation operation came as the typhoon approached the eastern coast of the Chinese mainland. Meanwhile, all 152 ferry passenger lines, including 347 vessels, were suspended, while construction work on 136 water infrastructure projects was halted, and 675 construction vessels were moved to safe areas.
Typhoon Kong-ri hit Taitung in southeastern Taiwan at around 1:40 a.m. last Thursday, and its center was in a sea area about 160 kilometers southwest of Wenling in Zhejiang Province by 10 a.m. last Friday.
