North Korea announced today that it has successfully test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile under the supervision of President Kim Jong-un.
The official KCNA news agency quoted a spokesman for the Ministry of National Defence as saying on Thursday: ‘The DPRK's Missile Department conducted a very important test, and this test, conducted under the order of President Kim, updated the recent records of the DPRK's strategic missile capability and demonstrated the modernity and worthiness of the world's most powerful strategic deterrent.’
Kim said from the launch site: ‘This test is a perfectly appropriate military action. As we have witnessed recently, the adversaries' tightening of their dangerous nuclear alliance and various adventurous military manoeuvres underscore the importance of strengthening our nuclear forces, and our nation's security situation and the ever-increasing future threats and challenges require us to continue strengthening our modern strategic strike forces and more fully complete the response posture of our nuclear forces.’
Kim emphasised that his country will never change its policy of strengthening its nuclear capabilities.
