WFP: 90% of North Gaza Residents Without Food
[05/ November/2024]
Gaza - SABA:

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) revealed today, Tuesday, that 90% of the population in the northern Gaza Strip is without food.

Antoine Renard, WFP’s Director in Palestine, expressed deep concern in an interview with "Al Jazeera" about food security and the looming threat of famine in Gaza. He highlighted ongoing efforts with UNRWA to deliver aid in Gaza City, emphasizing the widespread anxiety among humanitarian workers regarding UNRWA’s operations.

Earlier, the WFP warned that over 90% of Gaza's population is expected to face severe food insecurity by November.

In a statement, the WFP expressed "grave concern over new Israeli legislation affecting UNRWA," a critical organization for life-saving aid delivery in Gaza.

The statement further explained that "food systems in Gaza have largely collapsed due to the destruction of factories and agricultural lands, while shops and markets are nearly empty."

The WFP warned that the humanitarian crisis in Gaza could escalate into a full-blown famine if urgent actions are not taken, especially as winter approaches.

The organization noted, "We currently have around 94,000 metric tons of food, sufficient to feed one million people for four months, ready to be dispatched to Gaza. We are fully prepared to deliver these urgent supplies but require the opening and securing of more border crossing points."

The WFP concluded by warning that "if the decision to ban UNRWA is implemented, the consequences for the most vulnerable populations will be catastrophic."
