Astronomers discover four double star systems in Russia
[19/ November/2024]
Moscow - Saba:
Astrophysicists from Kazan Federal University in Russia have discovered four double star systems, which have been described as catastrophic stellar variables.

According to media reports on Tuesday, an international group of researchers led by a young scientist from the Department of Astronomy and Space Geodesy at the Institute of Physics at Kazan Federal University, Ilham Galiullin, discovered four double star systems consisting of a white dwarf and a low-mass companion star.

They have been characterized as cataclysmic stellar variables located at a distance of 616 to 1934 light-years.

Ilham Galiullin said: "Binary stars, in which a white dwarf pulls matter from its companion star, were discovered as part of an international scientific project, where we, together with astronomy students from Kazan University, analyzed data from the Chandra X-ray Space Observatory, Gaia Optical Space Observatory and the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) optical ground-based observatory.
