Sana'a - Saba:

The first athletics championship for university and community college students, competing for "al-Aqsa Flood" Cup, officially began on Sunday in the capital Sana'a.

This event marks the annual anniversary of a martyr and is organized by the Higher Education Sector of the Ministry of Education and Scientific Research, in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The competition is taking place at Ali Mohsen al-Muraisi Stadium in Revolution Sports City.

At the opening ceremony, Dr. Hatem al-Duais, Deputy Minister of Education and Scientific Research, and Dr. Nabeeh Abu Shusaa, Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, both praised the efforts made by the organizing teams and expressed their enthusiasm about this landmark event.

Dr. Al-Duais emphasized that the championship is an important step towards enhancing the educational and academic process, providing a platform for students to showcase their athletic talents, and promoting physical and intellectual development.

He also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the ministries of Education and Youth to foster sports competitions that build students’ capabilities and instill a strong cultural identity.

Dr. Ghaleb al-Qanas, a representative of the Higher Education Sector, noted that this championship, which involves 150 students from 20 universities and community colleges, aims to strengthen students' faith identity, promote moral values, and encourage creativity.

He added that such events are critical for connecting students to their universities, the country, and the state's broader development goals.

The first day's competitions included various events, such as the 1500-meter race, javelin throw, shot put, long jump, and others. In the 1500m race, Hamza al-Daifi from Sana'a University won the gold medal, while Suhail al-Farah from Queen Arwa University secured silver, and Basem Hadiyan from Sana'a University earned bronze. In javelin throw, Mohammed Mansour from Dhamar University took the first place, Abdul Aziz Al-Masouri from Sana'a University came second, and Abdullah Al-Banous from Al-Hikma University finished third.

The championship will continue for three days, with more events planned, including the shot put, long jump, 400m and 800m races, and the 4x100m relay. The final day will conclude with the remaining qualifiers and a closing ceremony.
